Support
for stopping junk e-Mail
Spam
is a big problem for most Internet users. Takingbandwidth, computer and
staff time, not to mention being used to transfer viruses and comit fraud,
spam is the nasty side of the net, and we have a hard time getting away
from it.
InternetDesign.com's
mail servers are now all fitted with powerful software to help prevent spam
getting through. Our primary accounts here which can recieve in excess of
200 spams per day now only recieve 3 or 4 per day. If your account does
not include anti-spam measures please contact your account executive and
take advantage of these worthwhile precautions.
Anti-Spam
software looks at the e-Mail it is recieving, and tries to decide if it
is a real e-Mail. If it contains certain words, then it may be spam (words
like "sex", "Million", "Viagra", etc), if
it comes from certain e-Mail addresses (letter-number-letter-number combinations
from AOL.com, MSN.com and Yahoo.com to name a few). If the mail contains
a false header (it claims to have come from a server that it clearly did
not come from), if the text is all IN BLOCK CAPS, and many other things
the software will score it on being spam. 10 is definatley spam. 1 is definatley
not spam. We usually set it to 5 - and that has a very high accuracy rating.
So
what happens if a genuine mail gets listed as a spam? All the presumed spam
mails are put into a folder called spam. You can access that folder through
our web based e-Mail program. it is very easy to quickly look through this
folder once or twice a week (once a day for very high traffic accounts)
and delete all the spam. If some real mail is getting classed as spam, you
can tell the anti-spam software to not block that one again. Equally if
some spam keeps reaching you, you can tell the software to block it.
For full instructions on using web based e-Mail, please click
here for our web mail support pages. The first time that you log in
after having the spam filters installed on your site, you will need to activate
the spam folder. To do this, click on the "Folders" link at the
top of the screen after you log in. You will then see this screen:
In the bottom right of this screen you can see a white box
containing the text "INBOX.spam". Click on this once to highlight
it, then click on "Subscribe". Congratulations, you have a working
spam filter, and you will never have to do any of this again!
Now if you refresh your folder list on the left hand side
(click the words "refresh folder list" in the top left corner
of ytour page) you will see that you have a folder on the left called "spam".
it will also tell you how many messages, and how many unread messages you
have in your spam folder (if you had 11 messages, all unread, you would
see "spam (11/11)").
The anti-spam software changes the name of each suspected
spam e-Mail so it starts "******SPAM******". Then you see the
original title. If you click on the e-Mail to view it you will see the rating
that it got as spam - this will look something like this:
This
mail is probably spam. The original message has been attached
along with this report, so you can recognize or block similar unwanted
mail in future. See http://spamassassin.org/tag/ for more details.

did not contain plain text, and may be unsafe to
open with some email clients; in particular, it may contain a virus,
or confirm that your address can receive spam. If you wish to view
it, it may be safer to save it to a file and open it with an editor.
The above details all the problems it has with this e-Mail, and gives it
a score. The score for this e-Mail is 17.5. Given that a score of 10 is
certainly a spam, this one clearly shouldn't be read by us! Below this text
there is a link to see the e-Mail - should you really want to.
Please remember that the only reason we all get spam is because people
DO buy from it. Just because one spam has something that is a good bargain,
don't think it is okay to respond to that one. Sure, use the information
to search online and find what you want, but buying from a spam - ANY spam
- keeps this multi-million dollar industry going.
